Signs Your Toyota Crown Hybrid Battery Needs Replacing

The Crown's 40-module NiMH pack tends to fade gradually rather than dropping out suddenly, similar to other large NiMH packs. The warning sequence we usually see:

• Fuel economy drops noticeably, the Crown's hybrid economy advantage starts to disappear
• The petrol engine runs more often, including at idle and at low speed where the car used to run on electric power
• The Check Hybrid System warning appears on the dashboard

Why the Crown Is Harder to Source Than Other Toyota Hybrids

The Crown Hybrid was sold only in Japan, never officially imported to Australia, so every Crown Hybrid on Australian roads came in as a used JDM import. That has practical effects for owners:

• Parts supply is thinner than for the Aqua, Camry or Corolla, all of which were sold here new
• Many general workshops and dealers can't source a Crown pack at all, or quote long lead times when they can
• The 40-module 288V configuration differs from the more common 34-module Camry pack, so a workshop unfamiliar with the Crown may quote the wrong part

How Long Does a New Crown Hybrid Battery Last?

A new aftermarket Crown pack should give 8-10 years on a privately driven vehicle. Heavy use shortens this; Crowns used as chauffeur or limousine cars (a common Crown use case in Japan and increasingly in Australia) see shorter life because of the higher daily charge cycling. New aftermarket — $4,290 fitted A brand new aftermarket 40-module pack with full 2-year / 100,000 km warranty. Longest lifespan (8-10 years expected) and the option we recommend for owners keeping the Crown long term.

Reconditioned — price on request A pack with weakened modules replaced and the unit rebalanced. Lower upfront cost but shorter expected lifespan (typically 2-3 years). Suited to owners on a tight budget or planning to sell the car within a few years.

OEM (genuine Toyota) — special order Genuine Toyota Crown pack. Highest cost, longer lead time, requires sourcing from Japan as a JDM-only part. Available on request for owners who want OEM specifically.
