The following codes are the ones most often found on the ATH20W brake actuator:

C1256: Booster Pump Motor Failure. The electric pump motor that maintains accumulator pressure has failed or is drawing excessive current. This is the most common fault on the 20 Series and typically the reason a rebuild is required. It is usually accompanied by pump noise and a firm pedal.

C1252: Accumulator Pressure Sensor Circuit. The internal pressure sensor is reporting incorrect values. On a vehicle of this age it commonly indicates a failed sensor or an accumulator losing pressure internally through a tired diaphragm.

C1254: Accumulator Pressure Low. Accumulator pressure has dropped below the minimum threshold. By the time this code is stored the pedal is usually noticeably hard.

C1391: Accumulator Low Pressure. The accumulator can no longer hold operating pressure. This is the final code before complete actuator failure and the vehicle should not be driven until it is repaired.

C1281: Brake Actuator Malfunction. A broader code confirming an internal fault in the actuator assembly. Frequently stored alongside C1252 or C1256.

C1201: Brake Control System Malfunction. A general brake control fault that accompanies the more specific codes above. On its own it does not identify the failed component.

Diagnostic and Replacement Process

1. Diagnostic scan and brake system assessment. Full scan using Techstream to read stored C-codes and confirm the actuator is the actual cause. We also check brake fluid condition, wheel speed sensor signals, and the 12V auxiliary battery. A weak 12V battery on a 20 Series can trigger ABS and VSC warnings with no actual actuator fault.

2. Actuator removal. The brake actuator is mounted on the firewall in the engine bay. Removal involves disconnecting brake lines with full contamination control, electrical connections, and mounting hardware. The high-voltage hybrid system is isolated before work begins.
